DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — May 3, 2011 — The House of Delegates of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), has granted a charter to the Chamberlain College of Nursing Honor Society to become its 494th chapter. The global community of nurse leaders will formally induct the Chamberlain College of Nursing Honor Society as its Phi Pi chapter at a chartering ceremony in October 2011.

“We launched the Chamberlain College of Nursing Honor Society in April 2009 to support our nursing students in their education and professional development and to reinforce their commitment to making a difference in global healthcare,” said Chamberlain College of Nursing Honor Society President Ellen L. Poole, PhD, RN, CPAN, CNE. “As the newest chapter of STTI, we will broaden our resources and join one of the most respected nursing organizations in the world.”

Since its founding, more than 625 students and nurse leaders have been inducted into the Chamberlain College of Nursing Honor Society at campuses nationwide. The honor society is comprised of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) students and nurse leaders in the community. Admission to Chamberlain's honor society is by invitation only. To qualify, BSN students must complete half of their required nursing courses, be in the top 35 percent of their cohort and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. MSN students must complete one fourth of their required nursing courses and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Nurse leaders are selected based on their achievements and contributions to nursing.

Following the chartering ceremony, all current members of the Chamberlain College of Nursing Honor Society will be invited to join STTI as part of the new chapter and will have access to STTI resources, including career assistance, volunteer opportunities, events, continuing education programs, member publications and STTI partnerships.

"Chamberlain has provided many opportunities for me to collaborate with other nursing students across the country," said Amanda Butner, a BSN student at Chamberlain College of Nursing’s Phoenix campus. "Now with membership to Sigma Theta Tau International, we will be connected to nursing students and nurse leaders around the world. I feel proud to be part of this global community dedicated to making a difference in people's lives."
