Education collaboration for ANA members encourages nurses to pursue advanced degrees

SILVER SPRING, Md.  and DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Aug. 7, 2012 — The American Nurses Association (ANA) and Chamberlain College of Nursing announced a new education collaboration that provides ANA members with a special tuition rate for Chamberlain’s post licensure online degree options. The collaboration provides education access to 3.1 million registered nurses (RNs) in 51 ANA constituent and state nurses associations throughout the United States.

Responding to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) call for an increase in the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree, Chamberlain's collaboration with ANA encourages members to take advantage of this opportunity and provides greater access to bachelor's or master's degree programs[1]. For example, RNs who hold an associate degree can pursue a bachelor’s degree online through Chamberlain while they continue to work. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that nurses who hold a bachelor's degree or higher generally have better job prospects and work within a broader scope of nursing practice[2].

"About half of all nurses in the United States hold a bachelor’s degree,” said Marla Weston, chief executive officer of the American Nurses Association. “Our collaboration with Chamberlain encourages members to achieve advanced education to meet the IOM’s recommendation that 80 percent of nurses hold baccalaureate degrees by 2020. A more educated nursing workforce can be better prepared to meet the demands of an evolving healthcare system.”

Through this education collaboration, members of ANA who meet Chamberlain’s admission requirements can now receive a special tuition rate for Chamberlain's RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) online degree completion option, RN-BSN to Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) online option and MSN degree program. Benefits also include a waived application fee and a designated Chamberlain admissions representative who provides enrollment assistance specifically for ANA members.

"Chamberlain and the ANA share a common goal of preparing nurses to lead the transformation of the healthcare industry and help provide better patient outcomes,” said Dr. Richard Cowling, vice president of academic affairs for Chamberlain College of Nursing. “We look forward to working with the ANA to offer its members advanced education opportunities to help elevate their careers.”
